New Jersey is home to more diners than any other state — over 500 at last count — and Bergen County alone has some of the most iconic and beloved. Here is my curated guide to the best, organized by what makes each one special.
The Classic Landmarks
These are the diners that have been serving Bergen County for generations. They are the ones with the chrome exteriors, the neon signs, and the menus that have barely changed in 50 years.
Bendix Diner, Hasbrouck Heights
This is the most famous diner in Bergen County — and maybe all of New Jersey. Built in 1947 by Master Diner, the Bendix Diner is a true stainless-steel classic that has appeared in films, TV commercials, and countless photography projects. It is located on Route 17 in Hasbrouck Heights, and despite a temporary closure in 2025, it is in the process of being restored to its former glory. It remains the gold standard for classic New Jersey diner culture.
Colonial Diner, Lyndhurst
A Mountain View diner from the mid-1950s, the Colonial Diner in Lyndhurst is a vintage gem that has kept its retro charm intact. It is open 24 hours and serves generous portions of classic diner fare — eggs any style, Greek-inspired specialties, and homemade pies. The neon signage alone is worth the trip.
State Line Diner, Mahwah
Located near the New York state line in Mahwah, State Line Diner has been voted Best Diner in Bergen County multiple times. It is a 24-hour operation with an enormous menu, famous for its breakfast platters, omelets, and late-night comfort food. The portions are generous, the service is fast, and the parking lot is almost always full — all signs of a great diner.
Best for Breakfast and Brunch
These diners do breakfast better than anyone. If your perfect morning includes a Greek omelet, home fries, and bottomless coffee, start here.
Chit Chat Diner, Hackensack
Located on Essex Street in Hackensack, the Chit Chat Diner is a local institution. It has been serving the community for decades, with a warm, welcoming atmosphere and a breakfast menu that goes on for pages. The corned beef hash is house-made, the pancakes are the size of dinner plates, and the waitstaff has been there so long they remember regulars' orders from memory.
Suburban Diner, Paramus
A reliable favorite on Route 17 in Paramus, Suburban Diner offers one of the most extensive menus in the county. Breakfast is served all day, and the portions are famously large. The spinach and feta omelet is a standout, and the challah French toast is the kind of dish you think about days later.
Matthews Diner, Waldwick
Matthews Diner in Waldwick is a bit off the beaten path, but locals swear by it. The breakfast sandwiches are exceptional, and the service is consistently welcoming. It is the kind of place where the owner greets you at the door and the coffee never runs dry.

Gotham City Diner, Fair Lawn
On Route 208 near the Fair Lawn and Ridgewood border, Gotham City Diner is a modern diner done right. Open late, with a diverse menu that goes well beyond the classics — think burgers, wraps, salads, seafood platters, and Greek specialties. It is a favorite for residents because the menu is genuinely thoughtful, and the adult menu has enough variety to keep everyone happy.
Tom Sawyer Diner, Paramus
Located on East Ridgewood Avenue in Paramus, Tom Sawyer Diner has been a Bergen County staple for years. It is especially popular on weekend nights and during the post-shopping crowd from the nearby Paramus malls. The hot turkey sandwich with gravy and mashed potatoes is the kind of comfort food that defines New Jersey diner culture.
River Edge Diner, River Edge
On Kinderkamack Road in River Edge, this unassuming diner serves some of the best Greek diner classics in the county. The moussaka and souvlaki are top-tier, and the dinner specials change daily. It is a quieter, more relaxed option if you want a meal without the weekend crowds.
Best Modern / New School Diners
Not all great diners are retro. These spots blend diner tradition with modern cooking and atmosphere.
Saddle Brook Diner, Saddle Brook
A modern take on the classic diner in Saddle Brook, this spot has quickly become a local favorite. The menu balances diner staples with contemporary dishes, and the space is bright and comfortable. The burgers are hand-pressed, the milkshakes are made with real ice cream, and the breakfast menu runs all day.
Coach House Diner, Hackensack
On Route 4 in Hackensack, Coach House Diner has been updated inside while keeping the classic diner spirit. It is open late, with a large menu that covers everything from eggs benedict to prime rib. The bakery case near the entrance is dangerous — resist the black-and-white cookies at your own risk.
Hidden Gems Worth the Drive
These diners are smaller and less famous, but they are beloved by locals for good reason.
Fair Lawn Diner, Fair Lawn
A neighborhood diner at the corner of River Road and Berdan Avenue, this is the kind of place where regulars have their own table. The breakfast specials are affordable and filling, and the service is personal. If you want the real Bergen County diner experience — no frills, just good food and warm hospitality — this is it.
The Ridge Diner, Park Ridge
A small, friendly diner on Kinderkamack Road in Park Ridge. Ridge Diner has been serving the community for years with a loyal local following. It doubles as a bakery, so the pies and pastries are made in-house. The chicken pot pie is a standout, and the turkey club is stacked high.
Elmwood Park Diner, Elmwood Park
Tucked away on Market Street in Elmwood Park, this diner is easy to miss but worth finding. It has a loyal local following, affordable prices, and a menu that covers all the diner classics without trying to be anything more. Sometimes that is exactly what you want.
What Makes a Great Bergen County Diner?
After years of eating at diners all over this county — from Fort Lee to Mahwah — I have developed a personal theory about what separates a good diner from a great one. It is not the menu size or the decor. It is three things: the coffee stays hot, the home fries are crispy, and the waitstaff makes you feel like you belong. Everything else is negotiable.
